Work Schedule
Unified Fire Authority has a three platoon system (A, B or C.) Full-time field employees (Firefighters, Firefighter Specialists, Paramedics and Fire Officers) work a forty-eight/ninety-six schedule. This means employees work for two consecutive twenty-four shifts and then are off for ninety-six hours (4 days). The shifts currently change at 7:00 a.m. As an example, if an employee’s shift starts at 7:00 a.m. on Monday morning, it would end at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The employee would then be off duty for the next ninety-six hour period and would return to work at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Some firefighter employees are also assigned to day-shift positions, such as assisting with firefighter training, or working in the Administration, EMS Operations, Fire Prevention or Public Information Outreach Divisions. These employees work a standard, forty-hour workweek.
