FAQ: Do I need my EMT certification before I’m hired as a Firefighter?
Although having your EMT certification is not required at the time of hire, we do recommend you take that step prior to employment.

Firefighter Minimum Requirements:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age by the written test date (July 2023).
EMT Licensure – Individuals applying for Firefighter positions will be required to be certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) licensure through NREMT in order to perform their regular job duties. Applicants who do not possess this certification at the time of hire must obtain it within the new hire probationary period. This certification training will be provided by Unified Fire Authority. Applicants are encouraged to obtain this certification before being hired.

Applicants must also possess, or be able to obtain, a valid driver’s license by the time of employment and should have a good driving record.
Paramedic Minimum Requirements:
Paramedics must have licensure through NREMT.

Medical Requirements:
Potential public safety employees will be given a medical examination prior to being hired, in accordance with UFA Policy and Procedure – New Hire Requirements. This may include but is not limited to Full-Time Firefighters, Paramedics, Part-Time EMS, Wildland Firefighters and Bomb/Arson investigators. The standard that is followed for the medical examination is that of NFPA 1582.
Potential candidates will also be required pass a pre-employment drug test conducted by a UFA contracted medical services provider.
